Professor Pranav N. Desai

Pranav N. Desai is currently Professor and Chairperson (2008-10) at Centre for Studies in Science Policy (CSSP). He specializes in science, technology and international affairs and is currently engaged in teaching analysis in science and technology policy and technology futures analysis. Professor Desai holds an M.Phil and PhD in Science Policy Studies and   conducts research in diverse areas of science policy including emerging technogies,intellectual property rights,energy and environment related issues. His work includes Science, Technology and International Cooperation, Har- Anand Publications, 1997, Cosatal Marine Environment of Gujarat (IV Volumes), Gujarat Ecological Society, 1997-1998, and Science, Technology, Costal Zone Management and Policy, Allied Publishers, 2003.  He is Regional Editor, South Asia, World Review of Science, Technology and Sustainable Development (WRSTD), Inderscience Publishers, and Associate Editor, International Journal of Institutions and Economics.

Dr V.V. Krishna is a Professor in Science Policy. He has a Ph.D. in Sociology of Science from the University of Wollongong, New South Wales, Australia.  He has 27 years of research experience in the areas of sociology of science, science and technology policy and national innovation systems in Asia and Pacific and social history of science. He has published 30 research papers and five books which include, Science, technology policy and diffusion of knowledge: Understanding the dynamics of innovation systems in the Asia-Pacific, UK: Edward Elgar, 2007); Scientific communities in the Developing Countries,  New Delhi: Sage Publications, 1997; Science and Technology  in a Developing World : Kluwer Academic Publishers, 1997; and S.S. Bhatnagar on Science Technology Development, 1938-54, New Delhi: Wiley Eastern Ltd., 1994.  Prof. Krishna was a visiting Professor at the Institute for Research and Development (IRD) & MSH, Paris, 2000-2004.  He is the founder-editor of Science, Technology and Society, published through Sage Publications. Prof. Krishna was a consultant to UNESCO, Paris, for its programmes on electronic publishing in the developing countries and the publication of the World Science Report 1998 & 2000-2001 & Unesco Science Report 2006.   He was a Council Member of the Society for Social Studies of Science (4S), USA and Member, International Council for Science Policy Studies, ICSU, UNESCO, Paris. He is also a member of Task Force on Clusters, UNIDO, New Delhi. Presently he is associated with the Asia Research Institute, National University of Singapore as a Visiting Senior Research Fellow.

Dr Rohan D’Souza

Dr. Rohan D’Souza is Assistant Professor at the Centre for Studies in Science Policy.  He was awarded his PhD from the Centre for Historical Studies at Jawaharlal Nehru University. He has worked on the technology of hydraulic manipulation in the Indian subcontinent. His recent publication includes Drowned and Dammed: Colonial Capitalism and Flood control in Eastern India (1803-1946), Oxford University Press, New Delhi, 2006. His publications and concerns range from issues dealing with environmental history, the political economy of nature conservation and history of technology. He has held postdoctoral fellowships at Yale University, University of California (Berkeley) and was a Senior Research Associate at the Centre for World Environmental History, University of Sussex.

Dr Saradindu Bhaduri

Dr Saradindu Bhaduri is Assistant Professor at the Centre. He holds a Ph.D in economics from the Centre for International Trade and Development (formerly, Centre for Studies in Diplomacy, International Law and Economics), JNU. He has been a Post-Doctoral Fellow in Evolutionary Economics at the Max Planck Institute of Economics, Jena. He has taught at Vidyasagar University, West Bengal, and held research positions in JNU and Indian Institute of Technology Delhi during his pre and post-doctoral years. His research interests lie in the areas of technological change, technological capability, entrepreneurship, intellectual property rights and institutional change in the context of economic development.

Some of the specific areas of research currently pursued by his research team include

  • Technological capability and entrepreneurship in the pharmaceutical industry;
  • Institutional transfer and homogenization of policy framework: patents and intellectual property rights
  • Intrinsic motivation, grassroot innovation and innovation policies
  • Informal institutions, technological change and institutional transformation
  • Socio-economic transformation and development.

Dr Madhav Govind

Dr.Madhav Govind is an Assistant Professor at the Centre for Studies in Science Policy. He is a science graduate from Canning College, Lucknow and has passed M.A. in Sociology with first position in order of merit from the University of Lucknow. He holds M.Phil and Ph.D. degrees from the Centre for the Study of Social System, Jawaharlal Nehru University. Prior to his joining the present position he  was a lecturer at Government P.G. College Kota, Rajasthan. He has participated and presented papers in various national and international seminars and conferences. He has published articles and books in the area of science, technology and society relationship. His recent publication is a book entitles: Sociology of Science. Anmol Publication, New Delhi, 2006. His broad area of interest are: Sociology of Science and Technology; Modern Science and Traditional Knowledge; Research Methodology in Social Sciences.

Dr Sujit Bhattacharya has joined this centre as ‘Visiting Professor’. He has a PhD in Informetrics from Indian Institute of Technology- Delhi, and MSc (Physics) from Delhi University. His main areas of work are in S&T policy studies, S&T indicators, and IPR studies in the context of R&D and innovation. He has published extensively in peer reviewed journals and presented papers at various international and national conferences; actively involved in extramural projects and has been project leader in some of these studies. He has co-authored a book on Telecommunications-Regulation and Strategy, co-edited a book on Scientometrics, and co-edited two issues of international journal Scientometrcs. His recent works include reports on ‘Indian Patenting Activity’, ‘R&D and Innovation Activity of Firms in India’, and co-author in a special issue on Assessment of China’s and India’s research literature in Technology Forecasting and Social Change. He is associated with international collaborative network ‘COLLNET’ and ISSI (International Society of Scientometrics and Informetrics) in various capacities.

Mr. Sarma joined as Research Associate in 2007. He completed his M.Phil in science policy and is working towards his PhD in sectoral systems of innovation with particular focus on Indian ICT industry. He graduated in international management and holds diplomas in sustainable development and database development. Prior to this assignment, Mahesh has worked as a faculty at Amity Business School, and has run a technology intermediary for two years. His research interests include national system of innovation, idea of development, environmentalism and philosophy of technology. He has participated and presented papers in more than fifteen international conferences and workshops and is a recipient of commonwealth fellowship as well as UGC Research Associate Fellowship.

 

DOCUMENTATION UNIT

CSSP has a well stocked documentation unit, assisting the faculty and students of the centre in particular and university in general in research work. It provides information, reference and documentation services to researchers and faculty members. It systematically collects research reports from the S&T ministries and R&D centres. It has a collection of approx 1000 monographs and 1000 reports pertaining to the Science Policy Studies, Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) and Innovation Studies. It maintains a blog titled CSSP Research Updates (http://www.cssp_jnu.blogspot.com) for outreach activities.

Dr. Anup Kumar Das, Documentation Officer of the Centre, is an avid professional with expertise in the fields of knowledge management, digital information management, research communication, inter-sectoral/ cross-cultural programme management and ICT for development sphere. He was associated with the UNESCO, IGNOU, INSDOC and Vigyan Prasar, before joining CSSP in January 2007. He holds an Associateship in Information Science (a PG degree) from Indian National Documentation Centre (INSDOC), CSIR; and MBA in Human Resources Management from the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU). He also completed A-Level (PGDCA) from DOEACC Society; Online Courses on e-Learning Policies and e-Business Strategies from Asian Development Bank Institute, Tokyo; General Course on Intellectual Property (DL-101) from WIPO Worldwide Academy, Geneva. He has submitted his doctoral thesis titled ‘An Evaluative Study of Some Selected Libraries in India undergoing the Process of Digitization’ in Jadavpur University, Kolkata. His research interests include Digital Libraries, Open Access Archive, e-Learning, ICT for Development, Scientometrics and Knowledge Management. He has published a number of papers in different journals and presented papers in different international/ national conferences. His recent work includes ‘Open Access to Knowledge and Information: Scholarly Literature and Digital Library Initiatives – the South Asian Scenario’, UNESCO, New Delhi, 2008
