CSSP Research Project 2

Project Title:
Socio-economic Study of  Rainfed Agriculture & Low Input Animal Husbandry in India

The Project titled Socio-economic Study of Rainfed Agriculture and Low Input Animal Husbandry in India was awarded to the Centre for Studies in Science Policy (JNU) in 2010. To pursue the objectives of this grant, a unit termed CSSP-Economic Research Unit (CSSP-ERU) was formed.  The CSSP-ERU will evolve policy instruments for directing public investments towards rainfed agriculture and low-input animal husbandry.

CSSP-ERU will provide research support for advocacy initiatives by the Revitalizing Rainfed Agriculture (RRA) and Rainfed Livestock Networks (RLN). In effect, the CSSP-ERU will attempt to frontally address the  skewed nature of existing  public investment patterns in which   rainfed areas (as opposed to perennial irrigated  zones) and low input husbandry (as opposed to high-input) receive inadequate policy attention and in part causing the continued aggravation of   regional economic imbalances. It is the belief of the CSSP-ERU that critical policy corrections by decisively restructuring public investment regimes in India can yield positive economic outcomes in both agriculture and animal husbandry.

The CSSP-ERU will be guided and supervised by a Board of Advisors. The Board of Advisors will consist of Prof. Kanchan Chopra (ex-Director Institute of Economic Growth, New Delhi), Prof. Amit Bhaduri (Emeritus Professor, Centre for Economic Studies and Planning, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi), the Chairperson of CSSP, Prof. V.V. Krishna,  Prof. Pranav Desai,  Dr. Rohan D’Souza, Dr. Madhav Govind, Dr. Sardindu Bhaduri & Mr. Vijayshankar (Director, Samaj Pragati Sahyog, Madhya Pradesh).
