Special Programmes

Centre for Advanced Studies (CAS)

I.  Introduction:

The Centre for the Study of Social Systems has been selected by the UGC for induction and support under CAS Programme. It sanctioned a grant of Rs.59.50 lakhs (Rs.28 lakhs for non-recurring expenditure and Rs. 31.50 lakhs for recurring expenses for five year to strengthen the infrastructure and other aspects of our Centre.

Grants under the CAS Programme are earmarked for the a) Equipments-Multimedia Lab, b) Building, c) Reprographic facilities, d) Contingency, e) Travel/Field Facilities/field trips, f) Seminar/Conferences/Workshops, g) Visiting Fellows, h) Books & Journals, i) Hiring charges, and j) Advisory Committee Meeting.

Grants are available for field work by faculty members of the Centre in the following thrust areas:

  1. Economy, Society and Culture in the Era of Globalization
  2. Ethnicity, Caste, Identity and Social Movements
  3. Sociology of Knowledge, including indigenous knowledge and Indian social thought.
  4. Sociology of science and technology including information and communication.

II.  Achievements

The CAS Programme has financed seminars and extended financial assistance to faculty members for different academic activities including organising of seminar/conferences, field work and preparation of manuscripts.

III. Seminar/Conferences

The CAS Programme has sponsored the following seminars/conferences/workshop during the period.

  1. National Seminar on “Social Research on North East India: Issues and Challenges held on 25-26 February 2010 .
  2. Workshop on “Gandhian Studies” held on November 2009.
  3. National Workshop on “Hind Swaraj Centenary Seminar on “How to Understand and Misunderstand Gandhi” held on 19th November 2009.
  4. “Ph.D. Research Scholars Seminar” held in 2-3 March 2010.
  5.  Seminar on “Levi Strauss and Research Methodologies” on 6th March 2010.
  6. Panel Discussion on “Journalists Enquiry vs Sociological Enquiry” held on 6th February 2010.
  7. Workshop on “Data Analyses” to be held on 26-2nd April 2010.
  8.  Workshop on “Representation of Women in Art and Politics” on 23rd March 2010.

IV.  Visiting Fellow

During the period the Centre had the benefit of scholarship of many distinguished visitors including.

  4. Dr. V. Janardhan, Department of Sociology, University of Hyderabad, Hyderabad from 14th to 21st march 2010.

V.  Lectures Delivered by Visiting Fellows:

  1. Prof. Jan Scholte, Centre for Regionalization and Globalization Studies, Warwick University, UK delivered a lecture titled “Political Face of Globalization-Conceptualizing Global Democracy” on 14th January 2010.
  2. Prof. Rajesh Gill, Department of Sociology, Punjab University, Chandigarh delivered a lecture titled “Seeking Community among Individuals: The contemplating Predicament” on 9th February 2010.
  3. Prof. Paramjit Singh Judge, Department of Sociology, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar delivered a lecture titled “Naxalite Movement and its Construction of India’s Freedom “on 2nd March 2010.
  4. Dr. V. Janardhan, Department of Sociology, University of Hyderabad, Hyderabad delivered a lecture titled “Telangana: A Sociological Assessmemnt” on 18th March 2010.
  5. Dr. V. Bhargavi, Director, Bapu Trust for Research on Mind and Discourse, Pune delivered a lecture titled “Legal and Social Systems Impinging on lives of persons living with a mental Illness” on 22nd March 2010.

VIII. Books and Journals

The CAS Programme purchased 98 books from April 2009 to March 2010. The total numbers of books purchased under CAS Programme are 2879.

 

Global Studies Programme (GSP) at JNU

I.  Introduction:

The Centre has developed a special collaborative programme with Institute for Sociology, Albert Ludwigs, University, (Freiburg, Germany), and Kwazulu Natal University (Durban, South Africa).  The eighth batch of GSP arrived in January 2010 It includes 24 students from 17 countries.  The countries include Argentina, Latavia, USA, Italy, Russia, Canada, Cyprus, India, Spain, Finland, Malaysia, Turkey, Botswana, Denmark, Poland. The Global Studies Programme organized an Orientations Programme on 6th January 2010. The students of the eight batch (2010) of the GSP were sent for field visit to Varanasi, Sarnath and surroundings on 13th to 14th March 2010 to conduct fieldwork. 

II.  Visiting Fellows:

During this period the following Visiting Professors were invited by the Global Studies Programme at the Centre

III.  Special Lectures:

  1. Prof. Jan Scholte, Centre for Regionalization and Globalization Studies, Warwick University, UK delivered a lecture on “Political Face of Globalization-Conceptualizing Global Democracy” on 14th January 2010
  2. Dr. Sabeha Mufti, Department of Media Education Research Centre, University of Kashmir, Sri Nagar delivered a lecture on “Social Conflict and Media in South Asia: A Case of Kashmir” on 10th February 2010.
  3. Prof. J.P.S. Uberoi, Emeritus Professor, Delhi School of Economic, University of Delhi, Delhi delivered a lecture on “Three Lives of Things: Post-Modern Economic Sociology” on 23rd February 2010, chaired by Prof. Susan Visvanathan.
  4. Prof. Ari Sitas, University of KwaZulu University Natal, Durban, South Africa delivered a lecture on “Ethnics of Reconciliation-Pipe Dream or Reality: Is Mandela the Don Quixote of the 21st Century” on 4th March 2010.
  5. Dr. Fozia Manan, Department of Sociology, University of Dhaka, Dhaka, Bangladesh delivered a lecture on ‘Media and Society in Bangladesh’, 13th March 2010.
  6. Prof. Manjeet Chaturvedi, Department of Sociology, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi delivered a lecture on “Media in India: Some Reflections” on 24th March 2010.

IV.  Books:

67 books were purchased in 2009-2010.  During the period from 2000 to 2010, the GSP purchased 606 books up to March 2010.

V.  Organization of Seminars/Conference/Workshop:

The Global Studies Programme has organized the following seminar/ conferences/workshop:

  1. Workshop on ‘Electoral Reforms in India’ held on 18 July, 2009.
  2. Panel Discussion on ‘Why Political Reforms are so urgent now?’ held on 19th July 2009.
  3. Seminar on ‘Gandhi and Hind Swaraj’ on 19th November 2009, Chaired by Prof. Susan Visvanathan.

VI. Special Projects

The UGC has provided support under UGC-DAAD PPP Project on ‘Epistemological Pluralism and Bilateralism: Ayurveda in a Globalizing World’ of the ‘UGC DAAD Exchange of Senior Scientist Programme’ under the auspices of Global Studies Programme.

 

Dr. Ambedkar Chair

Dr. Ambedkar Chair in Sociology set up in 1992 by Dr. Ambedkar Foundation, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India, New Delhi, with Chair Professor-1 and the Supporting Staff of Research Officer-1, Stenographer-1 and Peon-1, has been functioning with a modest annual grant of Rs.10 lakhs.  The Chair organized a two-day National Seminar on ‘Education among Dalits in the Post-Independent India’ during December 6-7, 2009.  The seminar deliberated on the various sub-themes related to the higher education among the Dalits in India.
The Chair Professor brought out the second revised edition of his Beyod Ambedkar: Essays on Dalits in India (first published in 1995).
The Chair Professor has undertaken a research project on Untouchability in Urban Areas: A Comparative Study of Allahabad and Kurukshetra Cities.  The project is continuing.  Besides, he has taught an optional course – Sociology of Urban Life in India and supervised M.Phil and Ph.D. research of a few students in the Centre.

The Vice Chancellor of JNU has recently signed a MoU with University of Essex which allows scholars from both the universities to participate in conferences and workshops of mutual interests in CSSS, JNU and the Department of Sociology at University of Essex.
