Prof. Kasturi Datta received Ph.D. degree in Biochemistry from Calcutta University . After spending several years in USA as Post Doctoral Research Fellow, she returned to India and started her professional career in 1977 at School of Environmental Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University as Assistant Professor and became Associate Professor in 1985 and Professor in 1993. She became Dean, SES, Jawaharlal Nehru University. She has been invited by the University to join also as Adjunct Professor in Special Centre for Molecular Medicine from 2000 onward. After superannuation she continued her activities in SES JNU as INSA Senior Scientist (2008 -2010) and presently holds the position of DBT Distinguished Biotechnology Professorship (2010- ). Prof. Datta has initiated research activities in Environmental Biology division and established a vibrant group working in the area of “cellular signaling”. Twenty five students have been awarded Ph.D. degree under her guidance and she has one hundred one papers in International journals in her credit. In addition to professional assignments at JNU, Prof. Datta is actively engaged and provides leadership in development programmes of enormous importance to India in education, Science and technology.  She is the member of all three National Academies of India and also third world Academy of Sciences. Also she is member of HUGO. She is the recipient of several awards, few of them are Ranbaxy Award for basic Medical Science, Senior Women Bioscientist, DBT, FICCI for life science, Basanti Devi Amir Chand, ICMR and J. C. Bose, UGC.
