Prof. Kasturi Datta received Ph.D
degree in Biochemistry from Calcutta University (1968). After
spending several years in USA (1968-1973) as Post Doctoral Research
Fellow, she returned to India and joined as pool officers at AIIMS,
New Delhi. Prof. Datta started her professional career in 1977 at
School of Environmental Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University as
Assistant Professor and became Associate Professor in 1985 and
Professor in 1993. She became Dean, SES, Jawaharlal Nehru
University, performed as Dean at Jawaharlal Nehru University in
2001.
She has been invited by the University to join also as Adjunct
Professor in newly created Special Centre for Molecular Medicine
from 2000 onward. In two spells (1980-81) and (1986-87) she has
joined at Roche Institute of Molecular Biology, Nutley, USA as
visiting Scientist 1991 and 1996. She visited Germany at Max-Plunk
Institute at Martinsried in the Exchange Programme. Prof. Datta has
initiated research activities in Environmental Biology division and
established a vibrant group working the area of “cellular
signaling”. Twenty two students have been awarded Ph.D degree under
her guidance and she has ninety papers in International journals in
her credit. In addition to professional assignments at JNU, Prof.
Datta is activity engaged and provides leadership in development
programmes of enormous importance to India in education, Science and
technology.
