SUMMARY Prof.
Ummu Salma Bava is Director, Europe Area Studies Programme and Professor of
European Studies at the Centre for European Studies, and Co-ordinator, The
Netherlands Prime Minister’s Grant, School of International Studies,
Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. She was Chairperson of the Centre
from July 2009 – July 2011 and also the Director, UGC Europe Area Studies
Programme (December 2006 - March 2007). She is also a Guest Faculty at the Foreign Service Institute, Ministry of External
Affairs, New Delhi, India. Her expertise on India has brought her and
the University recognition as an Associate Fellow of the prestigious Asia
Society, New York, USA. She was earlier
Associate Professor in the erstwhile Centre for American and West European
Studies, SIS, JNU. Prior to joining JNU she
was a Reader in the Department of Political Science, Zakir Husain College,
University of Delhi. Prof. Bava participates in the teaching programme of the SIS
and the Centre. In the M.A. Politics
(International Studies) she teaches Politics and Foreign Policy of Germany and
Case Studies in Peace and Conflict Resolution. In the Centre she teaches Issues in European Security and guides both
M.Phil. and Ph. D. students. She has authored the book West German Realpolitik.
Unification, EU and European Security 1949-1995. (Kanishka, 2001). She
has other publications to her credit and has participated in many national
and international conferences. She was invited by the US Department of State
to visit the US under the International Visitor Leadership Programme in
May-June 2007. She was selected for the European Union Visitor Programme,
Brussels, February 2006 and also invited as Personnalites D'Avenir by the
French Ministry of External Affairs to Paris, October 2005. She speaks fluent
German. Prof.
Bava holds a Ph.D. in European Studies from the School of International
Studies, JNU and a M. Phil. in International Relations from the University of
Delhi. She has a M. A. in Politics (International Studies) from SIS, JNU. She
also has a Diploma in Peace and Conflict Resolution from Uppsala University,
Sweden and Diploma in International Studies from the University of Vienna,
Austria. |

PROJECTS THE
NETHERLANDS PRIME MINISTER’S GRANT COORDINATOR Grant given by the Netherlands Prime Minister H.E. Dr.
Jan Peter Balkenende on his visit to India in January 2006 to the Centre for
European Studies, SIS, JNU. The grant was used to set up a library and state of the art lecture cum seminar
room. Named after the famous Dutch painter Rembrandt van Rijn, the Rembrandt Room houses the library called
the Erasmus Collection. With over 500 books
on the shelves, the students and faculty of the Centre for European Studies
have access to the Erasmus collection which focuses on Contemporary European
Politics, Economics, Foreign and Security Policy and Society and issues of
international politics, thereby enhancing both the teaching and research
quality. |
