Prof AL Ramanathan, School of Environmental Sciences, receives Bharat Petroleum's Energising Bharat Award for Water Conservation
Prof AL Ramanathan, School of Environmental Sciences, receives Bharat Petroleum's Energising Bharat Award for Water Conservation.
Prof. AL. Ramanathan, the man who devised an eco-friendly and inexpensive way to remove toxicity from water and make it drinkable. He is the winner of the Energising Bharat Award for his large-hearted effort in the field of Water Conservation.
Parts of Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar are rain-shadowed and have ground water as their source for potable water. Due to ecological imbalance and overuse of land, the Fluoride and Arsenic levels in the groundwater had risen to dangerous levels. People were unaware that the rising incidences of skin cancer, and skeletal and dental fluorosis were due to the water they drink.
This Master and PhD of Science started his field work in Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri. He, along with his team of experts, developed a simple, inexpensive and eco-friendly technique to bring down Fluoride levels in ground water within the prescribed limit. His technique did not involve electricity and used local materials like sand and clay. Moreover, he made use of the remainder materials to make bricks so that they could be reused for building houses and didn't need to be thrown into the soil, which pollutes it over time.
For eight villages at the border of UP and Bihar, where Arsenic was above 50 ppb, they employed geophysical and geochemical techniques to identify alternate aquifers, which has lo Arsenic levels to 10-20 ppb. They also coordinated with local government agencies to install bore wells that would supply potable ground water to the villagers.
Prof. Ramanathan's team (JNU and Annamalai University,TN)has developed de-fluoridation plants in three villages in Dharmapuri district. A typical plant is attached to the main water supply tank in the village and, through gravity and back pressure, they have been successful in reducing Fluoride from 2.8 ppm to 0.9 ppm, and supplying water to 500 families in each village.
Around 3000 villagers have been drinking Fluoride free water for over three years and few lakh people consume low Arsenic drinking water in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.
Kudos to Prof. Ramanathan's team for making these techniques environment friendly and cost effective. These do not require technical expertise and can be maintained without much effort. Not stopping at helping a vast number of people, they aim to publish a comprehensive report on the western Himalayas with the forecast for the next 50-100 years.

Discovery of biodiesel production from carbon dioxide concentrating oleaginous bacterium Serratia sp. ISTD04 from marble rock
The discovery is related to production of biodiesel from carbon dioxide concentrating endolithic bacterium, Serratia sp. ISTD04, isolated from marble rock, enriched by continuous enrichment in the presence of carbon dioxide in the chemostat, produces lipids inside the cells (oleaginous bacterium) and biodiesel. Carbon dioxide concentrating mechanisms of bacterium were evaluated by carboxylating enzymes and ribulose 1, 5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (RuBisCO), formation of lipids inside cells by Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and extraction of lipids, and transesterification of lipids by methanol and sodium hydroxide produced biodiesel, energy efficiency similar to jet fuel. Discovery of a novel mechanism and pathway in Entamoeba histolytica for cell killing and virulence
Entamoeba histolytica is the causative agent of amoebiasis, a major public health problem in developing countries. Invasion of intestinal and extra-intestinal tissues, such as liver are the major manifestation of this disease. Unfortunately, detailed mechanism of cell killing and invasion is still unclear. In this manuscript a new mechanism of cell killing and invasion has been proposed. This involves biting off and ingesting distinct pieces of living human cells, resulting in cell death. After cell killing, the amoebae detached and ceased ingestion. The internalization of bites of living human cells is reminiscent of trogocytosis (from Greek trogo–, nibble) observed between immune cells but amoebic trogocytosis like ingestion differs since it results in death. Ingestion of bites was required for human cell killing. The initiation of trogocytosis follows a mechanism that has been proposed for RBC phagocytosis by the JNU group involving a number of novel molecules, including a C2 domain containing protein kinase. Drug - resistant strains of the fungus, Candida albicans , have been on the rise for several decades, striking immunocompromised patients who have undergone organ transplants, chemotherapy or HIV treatments. The drug - resistant fungus exploits a number of membrane - embedded transporters to eject drugs from its cells. The efflux pump Cdr1 is one of the ATP - binding cassette (ABC) superfamily of transporters, which is one of the main ways C. albicans rejects azole antifungal agents.
