Symbolisms & Imagery in Contemporary Peruvian Poetry: Dr. Rajiv Saxena
CSPILAS/SLL&CS, ISBN: 81-901849-2-X

The book: Simbolismos e imaginería en la poesía peruana contemporánea: En Memoriun Javier Sologuren is written in Spanish on contemporary Peruvian poetry and the Preface of the book has been written by the Ambassador of Peru in India. This is a topic which has very little researched or read in the Indian context. This might be due to multiple reasons of which the major one could be the vast geographical, cultural and linguistic space that separates India and Peru both of them which share a rich and vibrant culture, history and literature.

If one dwells for a moment on what is common between these two nations then many things would come to the fore and it is these commonalities that has to be stressed upon to open up this new and exciting world to the Indian audience. This book has makes special reference to the great poet Peruvian Javier Sologuren. His unexpected and untimely demise in 2004 was the turning point in deciding to write a book especially dedicated to this essentially humanist and universal poet. Even though the book deals with contemporary Peruvian poetry as well as the usage of symbolisms and imagery of universal and philosophical nature, there is always a comparison and contrast of the former with Javier Sologuren’s works and poetic creations. This book delves into the various symbols and images that are used in contemporary Peruvian creative works and analyses them with the perspective of an Indian.

It might seem strange that from the land of the great poet César Vallejo, this poet has been chosen and a book has been dedicated to him, but precisely because of the fact that so much has already been written on Vallejo that the need of the hour was to popularize the less studied but well known authors of Latin America and popularize them in India.
