 Prof.
Yash Pal Chancellor
Eminent
physicist Prof. Yash Pal has been appointed as Chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru
University. Prof. Yash Pal takes over as Chancellor from Dr. Karan Singh.
The former
Chairman of the University Grants Commission said that his vision for the
university during his five-year-term would be same as the one Jawaharlal Nehru
had for the varsity. He emphasized that he was more a student himself at the
university than its Chancellor.
Prof. Yash
Pal, responsible for setting up the first satellite education system in the
country, was born in Pakistan and his family migrated to Delhi during Partition.
He spent some
25 years as a research scientist at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research
in Mumbai. Later, he moved to US where he worked on nuclear projects. He
returned to India and headed the satellite education programme started by space
scientist Vikram Sarabhai at the Space Applications Centre, Ahmedabad.
