The Dean appreciated the students’ participation as well as the sports office’s efforts in organising such an event that enabled the entire JNU community to appreciate the achievements of the differently able members of the university. (Damayanti V. Tambey, Deputy Director, PE, Sports Office) Japanese Cultural Festival
‘KIZUNA’
The Centre for Japanese Korean and North East Asian Studies, SLL&CS with the support of the Embassy of Japan and The Japanese Association (Delhi) organized a three day Japanese Cultural Festival- ’Bunkasai’ held on 28-30 March, 2008 under the title Kizuna. The term Kizuna in Japanese refers to ’bonding’. The event was coordinated by Dr. Manjushree Chauhan, CJKNEAS. The event started with a one day seminar on ’Japanese Culture Studies’ held on 28 March, 2008 at SLL&CS. Senior professors and research scholars from SLL&CS and SIS, JNU and University of Delhi presented research papers on various aspects of Japan and its culture. The Seminar was convened by Dr. P.A. George, CJKNEAS. It consisted of three academic sessions covering wide range of issues on Japan such as Japanese Society, Culture, Religion, Linguistics, Literature and Gender Studies. The event was almost historic for CJKNEAS as it was for the first time that a seminar exclusively on Japanese Culture Studies was held in India. The inaugural address was given by Prof. R. Kumar, Rector, JNU, and the welcome address by Prof. Varyam Singh, Dean, SLL&CS, was followed by some remarkable speeches by experts on Japan and also by senior delegates from Japanese Embassy as well as The Japan Foundation. The day provided students an opportunity to exchange their views with experts in Japanese studies. The following day saw a colorful and vibrant range of cultural activities performed by Japanese experts and students of Japanese Language from various institutions in Delhi. The day began with Yukata (Japanese dress) demonstration and a workshop on Calligraphy under the guidance of Mr. Iwashita from The Japan Foundation. The Chief Guest of the day was Mr. Hajime Matsumura, First Secretary, Embassy of Japan and Director, Japan Information Centre. The performances began with Japanese traditional drums (Taiko), performed by the Taiko Club Team of Japanese nationals. The JNU students performed Bon Odori (Japanese traditional dance) and a fusion of Indian and Japanese fisherman dance. The Managing Director of JETRO, Mr. Matsushima Daisuke performed the traditional Noh narration, which was a rare opportunity for the audience and students of Japanese language to get a first hand experience of one of the oldest Japanese art forms. In the latter half there were scintillating play performances by students of JAPROC and University of Delhi. This was followed by Karaoke performances by teachers, guests and students of D.P.S (Delhi Public School), Dwarka. The day ended with Japanese food stalls and Bon Odori (Japanese dance) where students, guests and teachers, all danced together to the rhythm of the Taiko drums. The last day of the event began with a lively fusion of Sitar and Tabla. It was interesting to see that the person playing Sitar was a Japanese national. The Guest of Honour was Ms. Mizuho Hayakawa 1st Secretary, Embassy of Japan. There was Ikebana (Japanese style flower arrangement) demonstration and lecture by a well known Ikebana expert Mrs. Ratna Guha. Other highlights of the day were ’Nininbaori’ - Japanese comedy show by JNU students and impressive cultural performances by students of Nihongo Center, MOSAI Institute of Japanese Language and JNU. The event ended with a slide show exhibiting the unseen hard work and dedication of the students of JNU that went behind the grand success of KlZUNA. Towards the end, the audience enjoyed a taste of Japanese food and a glimpse of Japanese culture through the Japanese traditional dance Bon Odori. The highlight of the event was that students and experts on Japan from various institutions came together to share the same platform. The event showed how rich is the Japanese culture and how strong is India’s ’bonding’ (Kizuna) with Japan.
