Prof. Anand
Kumar, Centre for the Study of Social Systems, School of Social Sciences has
been elected as National Secretary of the Indian Sociological Society for
2006-08.

Prof. Chaman Lal, Centre of Indian Languages, School of Language,
Literature and Culture Studies offered his award money to motivate young
scholars to write on the young Bengali revolutionary Preeti Lata Wadedar, who
was martyred by British Colonial police in 1930, for taking part in Chittagong
revolt.
Prof. Chaman Lal, was recently honored by ’Apni Bhasha’, a Kolkata based literary
organization for his contribution towards making a bridge between Hindi and
Punjabi languages and literatures through translations. He has fifteen books to
his credit in translation in Hindi and Punjabi, apart from equal number in
criticism and editing. He is particularly known for his translation and editing
of Martyr Bhagat Singh and Punjabi poet Paash in Hindi. While accepting the
honor, conferred by well-known Bengali writer Nabneeta Deb Sen and eminent
writers like Ravinder Kalia, editor of Hindi monthly from Kolkata-Vagarth, Prof.
Chaman Lal announced that the award money may be given to that writer who
shall write the biography of the young revolutionary Bengali martyr- Preeti Lata
Wadedar.

Dr. Alka Acharya, Centre for East Asian Studies, School of International Studies
has been nominated by the Prime Minister of India to serve on India-China
Eminent Persons Group. This Group was established under an agreement between the
Government of India and the People’s Republic of China to perform a significant
policy input function, intended to strengthen and diversify mutually beneficial
exchanges between the two countries.

Prof. Namwar Singh, Professor Emeritus has been appointed as Chancellor of
Mahatma Gandhi International Hindi University, Wardha.
Prof. Namwar Singh, Professor Emeritus has been awarded Bharat-Bharati honour by
Uttar Pradesh Hindi Sansthan with a cash award of Rs. two lakh fifty one
thousand.
Abhirup Saha, Research Scholar, M.A. (Economics), Centre for Economic Studies
and Planning, School of Social Sciences has been awarded the prize in the All
India Essay Competition for Students on “Government’s Proposal to Implement
Mandal Commission Formula for Reservation- Is it a backward or forward step?”
conducted by Nandini Voice for the Deprived.
Shakti Prasad Srichandan, M.Phil Scholar, Centre for European Studies, School of
International Studies has received the “Best Essay” award in the national level
(open to all) essay competition on the theme of “India’s Aspirations for a
Permanent Seat in the United Nations Security Council” organised by the
Association of Indian Diplomats. ( a forum of senior/retired Ambassadors, High
Commissioners and Foreign Secretaries of India). Shakti Prasad received a cash
prize of Rs. 10,000/- and a citation from Mr. Shashank, former Foreign Secretary
of India and President of the forum.
