US Policy towards South Asia: Focus On Sixty Years ((ed) M. Saleem Kadwai, CCUS&LAS/SIS) US Policy towards South Asia: Focus on Sixty Years was released in March, 2008. This book was launched as a tribute to Prof. M. S. Venkataramani, the doyen of American Studies in India. Dr. Jane E. Schukoske, Executive Director of the US Educational Foundation in India (USEFI), released the book. Prof. Venkataramani initiated studies on the United State in India at the erstwhile Indian School of International Studies. Among the chief guests who attended the program was Late Prof. Venkatramani's wife, whose gracious presence made the program a success. A copy of the book was presented to her by Prof. Kidwai, the editor of the book, to commemorate the contribution made by her husband in introducing the course on American Studies in India. The book launch was attended by a large number of students, teachers, scholars, diplomats and media people. The volume comprises of 13 contributions from experts in the field who seek to find answers to questions such as: what are American objectives and interests in the region and how the developments and changes that are taking place at global and regional level are bearing upon US- South Asia relations. The essays address and analyse key factors in the regions that affect US interests and suggest measures for the US policy makers to improve USA's ability to advance and defend its interests. The central objective that underlines the endeavour of the contributors is to suggest a policy framework for enabling the US to face the challenges and the opportunities. Essentially this work offers detailed information on the US Policy towards South Asia, which happens to be a unique sub-region in the international system. This volume is of immense value for the general reader as well as the specialist. It gives the former a lucid, informative and stimulating introduction, a helpful overview to the subject. It also caters to the specialist through its 13 crisply written essays from experts in the field. The outcome is an impressive orchestration of themes that comprise the burgeoning, though hotly contested, discipline of American Studies. The book is a must read for all those specializing the area. The program was made a success by the expert comments of Prof. A.K. Pasha who critically evaluated the volume. Prof. Partha Ghosh also spoke on the occasion and recollected his memories of Prof. Venkatramani. Finally Dr. Jane E. Schukoske concluded the program by congratulating Dr. Saleem Kidwai for bringing out such a commendable volume. Archana Mishra, Research Scholar, CCUSSLAS, SIS

Institutional and policy frameworks in India also facilitate innovative solutions for increasing international visibility and accessibility of scholarly literature and documentary heritage in this country. The publication has its genesis in the recommendations and proceedings of UNESCO-supported international conferences and workshops including the World Summits on the Information Society (Geneva & Tunis), 4th International Conference of Asian Digital Libraries (ICADL2001, Bangalore); the International Conferences on Digital Libraries (ICDL2004 & ICDL2006, New Delhi); and the International Workshop on Greenstone Digital Library Software (2006, Kozhikode), where many information professionals of this sub-region demonstrated their Digital Library and Open Access initiatives. This book describes successful digital library and open access initiatives in the South Asia sub-region that are available in the forms of open courseware, open access journals, metadata harvesting services, national-level open access repositories and institutional repositories.
