Jhelum Hostel is one of the oldest hostels of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi. It is a located in the Uttarakhand area of JNU. It is close to the famous Ganga Dhaba, JNU Health Centre and the Kamal (Shopping) Complex (KC). The hostel started functioning in the year 1977. Only the West wing was then ready for allotment and the East wing was under construction. It was ready for allotment by 1978. Only girl students were accommodated in during the year 1978. This was the first hostel where male students got allotment in one wing and female students in the other wing and shared the same mess. It was a successful experiment. This arrangement lasted till mid 1984. Therefore, girl students were shifted to Ganga hostel and the West wing was allotted to male students. It has a two storey building which has 198 rooms. The hostel lies in the centre of three hostels, Ganga, Sutlej and Yamuna. The famous Jhelum Lawns of the JNU Campus is named after the Jhelum Hostel. The Jhelum Lawns serve as the traditional venue for Presidential debate of the JNU Student’s Union (JNUSU) elections, International Food Festival and also other cultural activities like celebrations of Holi festival and the Chat Sammelan. Jhelum Hostel is organizing Chat Sammelan, which is a famous in JNU. It organizes day before Holi Festival.

 

The hostel is allotted only to male students. It has single seats for research scholars pursuing M.Phil and Ph.D and double seats for students pursuing Bachelor and Master courses. Currently there are 192 rooms available for students out of which 67 are single seats. The maximum capacity of the hostel is 330 residents. The Jhelumites (i.e. the residents of Jhelum) have been traditionally cosmopolitan, representing every part of the diverse Indian social and culture life.

 

The hostel is built in a manner so as to provide natural light and ventilation to all rooms and it is made of typical JNU style red bricks along with proper architecture to protect the building from the earthquakes. It has a small garden, different kind of trees in its premises. It has a vibrant and natural environment. Along with its students, this natural environment has made Jhelum a home for a wide variety of flora and fauna. The hostel has 24-hour water facility and drinking water is re-filtered through purifiers to provide clean drinking water to its residents. The hostel mess functions throughout the year and serves healthy and nutritious food to the residents. The hostel mess serves different kind of food items like Idli Sambar, Dosa, Poha, Dahi Chura, Biryani, Puri Jalebi, Chhole Bhature, Chow-mein etc. The hostel mess works on a no-profit-no-loss basis which means that the whole expenditure of the mess is equally divided among the residents. Jhelum Hostel also has a reading room for studying, a gymnasium for fitness and a television room for entertainment. The gymnasium and T.V. room are conveniently situated above the hostel mess. There are a variety of sports facilities available such as a Badminton court, a table tennis room and also facilities for playing carrom, cricket, chess, ludo etc. It provides a healthy and friendly environment for the well-being of the students. Jhelum hostel has developed its own identity and culture among JNU hostels. This hostel also serves as a space for debates among its students. Its environment is healthy, friendly and familiar among the residents, and Jhelum fraternity is formally referred to among its residents as Jhelum Parivar (Jhelum Family) and not as Jhelum Hostel. Many alumni of Jhelum Hostel have excelled in different spheres of life. This hostel has contributed many administrators, defense officers, professors and entrepreneurs to the nation.

 

The Hostel organizes its Annual Hostel Day function every year. Special dinner is served on this day to the guests as well as residents. Cultural activities are also organized on this day. Apart from this, sports tournaments are organized and prizes/mementos are distributed by the Senior Warden/Warden (Recreation).

 

Hostel elections are held every year in the month of September. In these elections, a President, Six Hostel Committee Members and six Mess Committee Members are elected through democratic process and Single ballot. These student representatives are elected to assist hostel administration in the smooth functioning of the Hostel. Besides these, four other student representatives are selected through interview by the wardens for looking after the duties of Common Room and Sports activities. The hostel has four wardens namely Senior Warden, Mess Warden, Sanitation and Maintenance Warden and Recreation Warden. To assist the wardens in the hostel administration, the hostel also has three clerical staff namely Office Incharge, Cashier and Caretaker. For the management of the mess, the hostel has two mess supervisors and other mess staff. The hostel also has a messenger who delivers mail to students.

A warm welcome to the modified and updated website of the Centre for East Asian Studies. The East Asian region has been at the forefront of several path-breaking changes since 1970s beginning with the redefining the development architecture with its State-led development model besides emerging as a major region in the global politics and a key hub of the sophisticated technologies. The Centre is one of the thirteen Centres of the School of International Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi that provides a holistic understanding of the region.

Initially, established as a Centre for Chinese and Japanese Studies, it subsequently grew to include Korean Studies as well. At present there are eight faculty members in the Centre. Several distinguished faculty who have now retired include the late Prof. Gargi Dutt, Prof. P.A.N. Murthy, Prof. G.P. Deshpande, Dr. Nranarayan Das, Prof. R.R. Krishnan and Prof. K.V. Kesavan. Besides, Dr. Madhu Bhalla served at the Centre in Chinese Studies Programme during 1994-2006. In addition, Ms. Kamlesh Jain and Dr. M. M. Kunju served the Centre as the Documentation Officers in Chinese and Japanese Studies respectively.

The academic curriculum covers both modern and contemporary facets of East Asia as each scholar specializes in an area of his/her interest in the region. The integrated course involves two semesters of classes at the M. Phil programme and a dissertation for the M. Phil and a thesis for Ph. D programme respectively. The central objective is to impart an interdisciplinary knowledge and understanding of history, foreign policy, government and politics, society and culture and political economy of the respective areas. Students can explore new and emerging themes such as East Asian regionalism, the evolving East Asian Community, the rise of China, resurgence of Japan and the prospects for reunification of the Korean peninsula. Additionally, the Centre lays great emphasis on the building of language skills. The background of scholars includes mostly from the social science disciplines; History, Political Science, Economics, Sociology, International Relations and language.

Several students of the centre have been recipients of prestigious research fellowships awarded by Japan Foundation, Mombusho (Ministry of Education, Government of Japan), Saburo Okita Memorial Fellowship, Nippon Foundation, Korea Foundation, Nehru Memorial Fellowship, and Fellowship from the Chinese and Taiwanese Governments. Besides, students from Japan receive fellowship from the Indian Council of Cultural Relations.
