22 Commandants to Save Your PC and Printers

      Please follow these to keep your PC’s in good working conditions
 

1. Never Switch Off your UPS, Supply from mains (not even at night). UPS should       always be kept on so that batteries are fully recharged.

2. Never use Letterheads/ Note sheets from a bound pad because it may have some hard glue at its top edges which may damage your printer permanently.

3. Never reply/open e-mails from unknown contacts it may be full of virus or hack your passwords or personal information in your PC.
4. Never get lured by advertisements of screensavers, wallpapers, matrimonial/ friendship sites, lotteries because these contains most dangerous types of viruses, worms, phishing agents and Trojans which may install lots of junk in your PC’s without your knowledge and keep adding such things to make your PC slower day by day.
5. Ensure that your PC has valid antivirus software installed in it. The antivirus updates should be run regularly at least once a week with internet connectivity.  The automatic updates of virus definition must be kept on.

6. Please ensure that file and printer sharing in your computer network setting is always off.

7. In order to be double save one must install some good ad ware program(from Lavasoft, a free version) such programs shall clean your computer of un-wanted cookies, data minors and ad ware that gets installed into your PC automatically when you open some sites with lots of advertisements.

8. Never try to download videos, movies and mp3 music from the net because most of such sites contain Trojans, ad wares and viruses.

9. McAfee Site Adviser should be installed to guide you about safe sites. It is available as freeware on its site can be installed to guide you about malicious websites that may be dangerous to your PC’s.

10. At the time of purchase of new computer always insist upon procuring original CD’s of operating systems, programs, antivirus, anti-phishing software with due licenses failing which you may be heading towards a disaster.

11. There are several websites ( like Trend-micro, McAfee, CA systems) that offer free virus scan for your computer.  In case of an emergency you can make use of such free online virus scan software.  Some of these can be searched through Google search.

12. For the better health of your PC please de-fragment your PC at least once in six months and clean your temporary internet files, history and cookies regularly through internet options of your browser.

13. Always ensure that privacy and security levels of your browser are set to medium or better.

14. Please Do not share your password or login ID’s with students, friends, colleagues and service engineers. Computer Maintenance Cell and JNU will not be responsible for any loss of data. 

15. Please logout from your internet user account before switching off your PC’s.

16. Please connect your UPS, Computer monitor to a three pin socket only with proper earth/ground available.  Use of two pin electrical socket may damage your PC permanently.

17. Never wipe your monitor with a water dripping cloth. Always use a damp soft cloth to clean only when monitor is OFF.  Never clean your monitor in power on position.

18. The TFT monitors are very sensitive to shock and may damage by mechanical shocks, so handle these with care.

19. In order to avoid hardship later due to accidental formatting, damage to computer, damage by virus etc the users are advised to take back up of their important data files in a CD/DVD at a regular interval of six months and index this data subject-wise or date-wise.

20. Please do not fiddle with your computer unless you are expert. 

21. Please avoid use of pirated/unauthorized software that may damage/modify the operating system files of your computer.
