*   BIOGRAPHY

 

Dr Gulshan Sachdeva is Professor of European Studies and Chairperson, Centre for European Studies, School of International Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. He has been awarded the prestigious Jean Monnet Chair in European Economic Integration and Energy Security by the European Commission. He isCoordinator of the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence for European Union Studies in India. He is also Editor-in-Chief of International Studies, a reputed peer reviewed journal published by Sage India. Earlier, he was a Director of newly established Energy Studies Programme and Director, UGC Europe Area Studies Programme. He has been partner in many Jean Monnet Networks and Horizon 2020 training networks.

 

He has extensive international teaching experience as well as proven project management expertise.He is a recognized expert in European Studies, International economic relations and development cooperation.His research is focused on Europe (economic integration, migration, EU-India); Russia and Eurasia (economic transformation, India-Russia/Central Asia); Asian connectivity; Afghanistan; South Asia (Indian economy & foreign policy, SAARC); Indian Northeast; Indian development cooperation and energy security.As an international consultant, he has worked as a Team Leader in the Asian Development Bank project on regional cooperation at the Afghanistan Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Kabul (2006-8); as a Senior Regional Cooperation Specialist in The Asia Foundation project in Afghanistan (2010); and as an External Collaborator with International LabourOrganisation (ILO, 2019). He was also consultant with the Institute for Conflict Management Delhi and the North Eastern Council, Shillong.

 

He has been ICCR Chair on Contemporary India at the University of Leuven (2014) as well as Visiting Professor/Scholar at the PompeuFabra University Barcelona (2018), University of Warsaw (2017, 2016), Mykolas Romers University, Vilnius (2013), Corvinus University of Budapest (2009, 2011, 2012); University of Antwerp (2008), University of Trento (2008), Institute of Oriental Studies, Almaty (2004) and Institute of Oriental Studies, Moscow (2002).

 

For many years, he was Assistant/Associate Professor at the erstwhile Centre for Russian, Central Asian & East European Studies JNU. Earlier, he worked as Assistant Research Professor at the Centre for Policy Research New Delhi and Lecturer in Economics at the University of Delhi. So far, 12 PhDs and 29 M.Phil have been awarded under his supervision.

 

Apart from books and monographs, Prof Sachdeva has contributed more than 100 research papers in academic journals and edited books and presented over 200 of his papers at international conferences and seminars throughout the world. He has also written project reports for industry and government ministries. He is regular contributor to mainstream Indian print and digital media as well as television discussions on Europe, international affairs and developmental issues. He holds Ph.D. in Economics from the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Budapest, and M.Phil. from the School of International Studies, JNU. He did his Masters in Economics fromPunjabi University Patiala.
