Pratiksha Baxi, Professor, Centre for the Study of Law and Governance, JNU
Pratiksha Baxi has been teaching at the Centre for the Study of Law and Governance since 2006. Baxi earned a doctoral degree from
the Department of Sociology, Delhi School of Economics, University of Delhi.
Her book, Public Secrets of Law: Rape Trials in India, was published by the Oxford University Press in 2014.
This courtroom ethnography brings together her interest in sociology of law, feminist theory and violence.
Baxi's research interests include critical feminist perspectives on sexual violence, medical jurisprudence, ethnographies of courts, sociology of violence, gender studies, and judicial reform.
Baxi was the founder member of the Gender Study Group (1992-1997) and Forum against Sexual Harassment (1998-2002) in University of Delhi, which primarily raised the issue of sexual harassment in the academia. She initiated the formation of the Law and Social Sciences Research Network, anchored at the Centre for the Study of Law and Governance, Jawaharlal Nehru University from 2007 to 2024. LASSnet is an interdisciplinary network, which has brought together more than six hundred scholars, researchers and lawyers from different parts of the world.
