  1. A seminar on "Capital Accumulation and Women's Labour in Asia Economies on August 8, 2012 was held at the School of Social Sciences-I, (Committee Room).
  2. A National Conference in collaboration with Pension Parishad was organized on "Social Security for Unorganized Sector Workers in India: Context and Prospects" was held on 7-8 September, 2012 at the School of Social Sciences-I (Committee Room).
  3. An International Conference on "Understanding Change in Rural India: Perspectives from Longitudinal Village Studies" was held on 19-20 November, 2012 at the JNU Convention Centre.
  4. A National Conference on "Political Economy of India" at the 36th Indian Social Sciences Congress held at KIIT University, Bhubaneswar, Odisha, December 27-29, 2012.
  5. In the current semester, the first talk of the continuing invited Lecture Series was delivered on Economic Studies on Labour Discrimination based on Sex and Gender by Doris Weichselbaumer (Associate Professor, Department of Economics, Johhannes Kepler University, Linz, Austria) on February 11, 2013 at 11:30 AM in the Dean's Committee Room/SSS-II.
  6. The second talk of the invited lecture series was on "The Employment Challenge in Chindiafrican World" by J. J. Boillot (Professor of Economics and former Advisor to French Finance Minister) on February 11, 2013 at 11:30 AM in the Dean's Committee Room/SSS-II.
  7. Prof. Patrick Heller (Professor of Sociology and International Relations, Brown University) delivered a lecture on "Democracy as Development: Some Comparative Lessons from Brazil, India and South Africa" on March 11 in the Dean's Committee Room/SSS-II at 11.30 AM.
  8. Prof. Gerry Rodgers (Visiting Professor, CISLS) delivered a lecture on "Decent Work" on March 14, 2013 at 2.30 PM in the Krishna Bharadwaj Room/CESP/SSS-II.
  9. A one-and-a-half-day workshop in collaboration with Actionaid India and Pension Parishad on "Pension for the elderly" was organized on 18-19 March 2013.

  1. The Centre held its Inaugural Lecture on "Which Agrarian Question? Indian Rural Labour, the International Corporate Food Regime and classic Agrarian Transition" delivered by Prof. Jens Lerche, School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London on November 30, 2012 at the SSS-I (Committee Room), JNU.
  2. An International workshop in collaboration with Action Aid India and Ministry of Rural Development, GOI, on "Rural Transformations in the South: Context and Prospects" on March 7, 2012 at India International Centre New Delhi.
  3. An Inaugural Conference on "Labour in Rural India: Economic, Political and Social Dimensions since early 1990s" on March 14, 2012 at the SSS-I (Committee Room), JNU.
  4. A Conference in partnership with Action-Aid India on "Era of Finance Capital and Challenges for Labour in the Global South" on March 26, 2012 at the India International Centre, New Delhi.
  5. A symposium in collaboration with Action-Aid India on "Politics and Economics of Arab Spring" on March 26, 2012 at the SSS-I (Auditorium), JNU.

A warm welcome to the modified and updated website of the Centre for East Asian Studies. The East Asian region has been at the forefront of several path-breaking changes since 1970s beginning with the redefining the development architecture with its State-led development model besides emerging as a major region in the global politics and a key hub of the sophisticated technologies. The Centre is one of the thirteen Centres of the School of International Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi that provides a holistic understanding of the region.

Initially, established as a Centre for Chinese and Japanese Studies, it subsequently grew to include Korean Studies as well. At present there are eight faculty members in the Centre. Several distinguished faculty who have now retired include the late Prof. Gargi Dutt, Prof. P.A.N. Murthy, Prof. G.P. Deshpande, Dr. Nranarayan Das, Prof. R.R. Krishnan and Prof. K.V. Kesavan. Besides, Dr. Madhu Bhalla served at the Centre in Chinese Studies Programme during 1994-2006. In addition, Ms. Kamlesh Jain and Dr. M. M. Kunju served the Centre as the Documentation Officers in Chinese and Japanese Studies respectively.

The academic curriculum covers both modern and contemporary facets of East Asia as each scholar specializes in an area of his/her interest in the region. The integrated course involves two semesters of classes at the M. Phil programme and a dissertation for the M. Phil and a thesis for Ph. D programme respectively. The central objective is to impart an interdisciplinary knowledge and understanding of history, foreign policy, government and politics, society and culture and political economy of the respective areas. Students can explore new and emerging themes such as East Asian regionalism, the evolving East Asian Community, the rise of China, resurgence of Japan and the prospects for reunification of the Korean peninsula. Additionally, the Centre lays great emphasis on the building of language skills. The background of scholars includes mostly from the social science disciplines; History, Political Science, Economics, Sociology, International Relations and language.

Several students of the centre have been recipients of prestigious research fellowships awarded by Japan Foundation, Mombusho (Ministry of Education, Government of Japan), Saburo Okita Memorial Fellowship, Nippon Foundation, Korea Foundation, Nehru Memorial Fellowship, and Fellowship from the Chinese and Taiwanese Governments. Besides, students from Japan receive fellowship from the Indian Council of Cultural Relations.
