SPANISH AND LATIN AMERICAN STUDIES
Centre of Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and Latin American Studies is innovative with regard to its academic structure. Keeping the spirit of the interdisciplinary character of the University, the courses are structured in such a way that in addition to the prescribed compulsory courses in the Spanish, the students are encouraged to opt for optional courses from other Centres/Schools to benefit from the faculty of other Centres/Schools. Unless a student obtains prescribed grades and credits in courses, he/she will not be qualified for award of degree.
The University follows semester system. Each course is for the duration of one semester and it is assigned a specific number of credits corresponding to the prescribed number of contact hours. The number of credits to be assigned to a course is determined by Board of Studies of School of Language, Literature and Culture Studies.
The mainstream programme of the Centre has a full time five year integrated M.A. programme in Spanish. Students have the option of a B.A.(Honours) degree at the end of the 6th semester (3rd year). The Centre has two separate research programmes:
» Doctoral programme of study in Spanish/Hispanic leading to the award of Ph.D. degree,
» Master of Philosophy programme of study leading to the award of M.Phil. degree.
Pedagogy:
The methodology adopted for teaching comprises of Lectures, Exercises, Tutorials, Audio Visual, Language Lab Drills and Interpretational Training, Seminars and Workshops. Apart from regular classroom teaching; seminars and lectures by visiting faculty and scholars, are also part of the curriculum. In addition, research scholars make presentations on their subject/area of research. The Centre follows a continuous evaluation system such as Sessional Test, Term Paper and End Semester Exam.
Medium of Instruction:
In the first two semesters the students are taught the language. From the third semester (second year) onwards, Spanish is the medium of instruction for all core courses. For optional courses English is the medium of instruction except Indian languages.
Doctoral Programme (Ph.D):
The Centre of Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and Latin American Studies is an inter-disciplinary centre. Scholars with M.Phil. degrees in Spanish and Latin American language Literature, Philosophy, History, Culture, Sociology, Linguistics; or those with relevant Spanish and Latin American experience are eligible to apply. In accordance with the University norms, students desiring to register for the Ph.D. Programme must have a FGPA of 6.00 on 10 point scale in their M.Phil. or those who do not have an M. Phil. degree should have at least 2 years of research experience in reputed institutions and provide evidence of equivalent published work in the intended areas of specialization. In addition, he/she should have obtained Master's Degree with FGPA of 6.00 in the 10 point scale/comparable standard or equivalent percentage.
M.Phil. Programme:
The M.Phil. Programme in Spanish, Latin American commences in the Monsoon Semester. Its objectives is to encourage independent research in the Hispanic field and course design and teaching plan has multi-disciplinary orientation, while the course contents and reading list can be accessed by the concerned course incharge.
The M.Phil. programme is a two-year/four-semester programme of study from which students may move on to the doctoral programme provided they meet the minimum grade requirements laid down by the University. A number of courses are offered at the M.Phil. level and, depending on his or her field of specialization a student can choose any four courses each of which carries six credits, and the course requirements are to be completed in the first two semesters of the programme. The dissertation carries 10 credits and is to be completed by the end of the fourth semester.
While the four core compulsory courses provide a general overview of the discipline, the optional provide the students with the opportunity to develop a specialization, and so build up an expertise that can be further channelized in the dissertation work he/she does.
M.A. Programme:
The two year comprehensive post-graduate programme offers courses in Spanish and Latin American literature and in translation and interpretation studies, as well as in language teaching methodology and contrastive linguistics. The programme aims to prepare students to conduct research at the M.Phil. level and also to impart translation/interpretation/teaching skills.
B.A. (Hons.) Programme:
This programme, besides imparting language proficiency in Spanish written and oral skills through a mix of traditional/modern methods, including language laboratory and film shows, also offers courses in civilization, culture and literature of Spain and other Spanish speaking countries. There are also courses on translation involving professional, technical, literary and commercial texts.
Apart from core courses, graduate programme student has to opt for two optional courses of four semesters each from disciplines like: Political Science, Sociology, History, Geography, Philosophy, English/Hindi/Urdu Literature, Linguistics and Computer Sciences etc. These are conducted during the course of the programme.
