Centre for Economic Studies and Planning School of Social Sciences, JNU Seminar by Rimjhim Aggarwal Arizona State University Generating Knowledge and Action for the Transition to Sustainability Abstract: In this talk I will discuss the framework for teaching and research in the emerging field of ''sustainability science,'' a problem driven field that addresses fundamental challenges of human–environment interactions. This framework integrates understanding of: a) coupled human-natural systems as complex adaptive systems; b) alternative futures given the inherent uncertainties; c) normative framings to evaluate alternative future states; and d) governance strategies needed to transition towards a desirable state. I will discuss the challenges that sustainability poses for mainstream economics and illustrate these challenges with ongoing multidisciplinary research on evolution of cooperation in the management of common water resources. Tue Oct 13, 2015
