The Dangerous Journey to Citizenship

<strong>CENTRE FOR THE STUDY OF DISCRIMINATION &amp; EXCLUSION (CSDE)</strong> a talk on <strong>The Dangerous Journey to Citizenship</strong> <strong>Prof. Samir Das </strong> (Visiting Professor, NEISP) While growing evidences point to the essentialist – if not 'racial' - underpinnings of an otherwise abstract and potentially expansive notion of citizenship, persistent attempts at acquiring citizenship by investing it with a 'racial essence' threaten to dismember the collective self that seeks to acquire it. This presentation will aim at developing the argument with the help of a series of ethnographic works conducted between 2012 and 2014 in Darjeeling hills, West Bengal.
