Ph.D in Women's Studies:

Programme Description:

The Centre for Women’s Studies offers a Ph.D. programme in Women’s Studies. The programme encourages research across the social sciences, humanities, law, policy, media, culture, development studies and related areas through feminist and gender-based analytical frameworks.

Admission to the Ph.D. programme shall be conducted in accordance with the eligibility criteria, admission procedures and reservation policies prescribed by Jawaharlal Nehru University and the University Grants Commission. Candidates seeking admission to the programme are required to possess the prescribed educational qualifications and valid UGC/CSIR-NET/JRF or equivalent qualifications in the relevant/allied subject areas.

Applicants may be required to submit a research proposal/synopsis indicating the research theme, scope of the study, statement of the problem, methodology and preliminary review of literature.

 

Coursework and Academic Requirements:

Ph.D. scholars are required to complete 2 semester coursework as prescribed under the Ph.D. Ordinance and the academic requirements of the Centre.

Research scholars are expected to:

  • - complete the prescribed coursework within the stipulated period 
  • - present their work regularly in Work-in-Progress seminars and other academic forums of the Centre
  • - participate actively in the academic activities, lectures, workshops and seminars organized by the Centre
  • - present their synopsis/research proposal before the Faculty/Research Advisory Committee within two/three semesters of registration, and ordinarily not later than two years from the date of admission.
  • - If the students require long leave, they need to inform the Department, the Supervisor and/or the Chairperson before leaving the University. They also need to let the Department know for how long the student is going to be away, the reason, and the date of return.
