Centre of Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and Latin American Studies (CSPILAS)
The Centre of Spanish, Portuguese, Italian & Latin American Studies (CSPILAS) was originally established as the Centre of Spanish Studies in the early 70s and subsequently expanded to include Portuguese & Italian language programmes and was renamed in 2004 as the Centre of Spanish, Portuguese, Italian & Latin American Studies as part of the School of Language, Literature and Culture Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. This is one of the leading centres of Spanish and Latin American Studies in South East Asia. The Centre has developed linkages with several international universities/institutions for academic collaboration and research. It has grown into a specialized Centre dealing with graduate, post-graduate and research level courses on language, linguistics, literature, culture & civilization of Spain and Latin America with an interdisciplinary approach. Traditionally the Centre has had its main research focus on Spanish and Latin American Literary Studies as well as on acquisition of Spanish language and FLT especially on L3 and L4 platforms. Recently Reception Studies, Latin American Cultural Studies and Latin American Post-Colonial Studies have been the new thrust areas.
As part of the Indo-Spanish Cultural Exchange Programme, a visiting faculty from Spain is regularly invited to assist in the teaching and research in the Centre. In addition, eminent Hispanists from Europe, USA and other countries regularly visit the Centre to deliver lectures and conduct workshops on themes related to Hispanic Studies and FLT. Recently, the Centre has been specially chosen by the European Union Consortium under the Erasmus Mundus Multiele Programme as a partner institution to impart Master's Programme in the Learning and Teaching of Spanish in Multilingual and International Contexts.
The Centre annually publishes Hispanic Horizon, a research journal, which has high academic visibility in India and abroad. Organization of national and international conferences is a regular feature of the academic activities of the Centre. The Centre also organizes an annual lecture called the Antonio Binimelis Memorial Lecture in memory of the distinguished Hispanist and Indologist from Spain who made pioneering contribution in the creation of our Centre and consolidation of the academic and research programmes. Distinguished academicians/scholars of Hispanic Studies are invited to deliver the memorial lecture which is attended by students, scholars, faculty members from JNU and other institutions and, among others, by the diplomatic community of the Spanish speaking countries in India.
