The Centre for Studies in Science Policy (CSSP) is unique to the Indian University system. Designed as a combined teaching and research effort, the CSSP explores various dimensions of the science-technology-society interface. Though oriented principally as an academic programme, the CSSP is nonetheless also committed to engaging with contemporary policy challenges. Research themes that currently comprise faculty and student concerns involve:  science, technology and innovation policies; university – industry relations; intellectual property rights; gender relations in science and technology; globalisation of innovation;  internationalisation of R&D; technology and environment; scientists in organisations and technology futures studies.

The Centre is open to students for admission from a variety of social and natural sciences, technology studies, engineering, medicine, law and management disciplines. The current focus of teaching and research at the Centre is on science and technology policy analyses including innovation policies; sociology of science and technology; social history of science and technology; economics of technological change and innovation studies; technology futures studies; gender studies in science and technology; science and technology for development; international affairs in science and technology and management of intellectual property rights.

The Centre offers direct PhD programme. This programme requires completion of 24 credits in four semesters. PhD programme is open to scholars who have completed an post-graduate degree in one of the social or natural science disciplines or demonstrated their research capability in science policy studies. 

Students while pursuing research have received research fellowships from various sources such as University Grants Commission through NETSDL Achievers ScholarshipJawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund FellowshipsSenior Research Fellowships from CSIRICSSR and other institutions and agencies.

Currently in 2026, over 30 research scholars are on the CSSP rolls pursuing research in the PhD programme. During the last few years CSSP students were employed by leading national and international institutions such as the Planning Commission, New Delhi; National Institute of Science Communication and Policy Research (CSIR-NIScPR) and Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) New Delhi; Central Universities, University of Delhi, The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI); National Research Development Corporation (NRDC); National Productivity Council (NPC); Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI); National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM); Institute of Development Studies (IDS, UK); WWF-India, New Delhi; Centre for Management in Agriculture, Indian Institute of Management (Ahmedabad); Centre for Technology and Trade, Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (New Delhi); Indian Institute of Public Administration (New Delhi), Research and Information Systems (RIS), New Delhi; World Bank; UNDP; and Innovation Management and Policy Programme, The Australian National University (Canberra, Australia).
