Abstract: Progressively decreasing costs of DNA Sequencing alongside high data quality are important aspects of implementing genomic tools into new markets. Scientists of all disciplines are using genomic tools today to answer questions that were previously not possible within budgets of most research lab set ups. Unlike capillary sequencing or PCR-based approaches, next-generation sequencing (NGS) allows researchers to sequence thousands of organisms in parallel. With the ability to combine many samples in a single sequencing run and obtain high sequence coverage per sample, NGS-based sequencing can detect very low abundance members of the alleles or microbes that may be missed or are too expensive to be identified using other methods. We highlight some of these methods in our talk.
