Abstract: While the theory of complex multiplication allows us to essentially describe all abelian extensions of an imaginary quadratic field, the case of real quadratic fields is still a mystery. In this talk, we will explain a general approach to constructing some abelian extensions of a real quadratic field using modular forms. The method we describe is a generalization of a method of Shimura.
