AI and the question of education and employment in the contemporary social order

Abstract: This presentation explores fundamental sociological questions about the rise of transformative technology, particularly Artificial Intelligence (AI). The advent of AI algorithms, machine learning, and the automation of routine tasks have led to significant shifts in social relations. AI is increasingly intruding and influencing every sphere of life. In this context, the presentation will highlight key issues, such as education and employment. How AI is changing learning, skill development, and labour-market dynamics, creating anxiety in the contemporary social order.
Bio: Professor Manoj Kumar Jena is Professor of Sociology and Chairperson at the Center for the Study of Social Systems, School of Social Sciences, JNU, New Delhi. His recent publications include “Media and Marginals: Medium, Message and Meaning”, Manohar, New Delhi, 2025, “Ways of Being Indian: Essays on Religion, Gender and Culture”, Speaking Tiger, New Delhi, 2024, “Sociology of Covid 19 Pandemic in India: Education, Digital Divide, Work and Wellbeing”, Har-Anand, New Delhi, 2022. Presently he is working on his book Death Ritual among Faith Communities in India.
